Question 2 of 2

What seems to trigger your sensitivity?

The 7-Day Barrier Reset

Your barrier needs a break. Stop all actives, simplify to cleanser + moisturizer + SPF, and let your skin heal. Most people recover in 7-14 days with the right protocol.

Reintroduce Actives Safely

Glad you're healed! The key is going slow: one active at a time, 1-2x/week to start, and never returning to your old aggressive routine. Our guide covers the exact protocol.

Maintain Barrier Health

Prevention is easier than repair. Key rules: one active per routine phase, slow introductions, "skin day off" with no actives. Our barrier guide has the full prevention protocol.

Introducing Actives on Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin can still use actives—you just need lower concentrations, slower introductions, and buffer techniques. Start with the mildest options and build tolerance gradually.

Could Be Rosacea

If almost everything irritates your skin and you have persistent redness, you might have rosacea rather than just sensitivity. It's worth checking our rosacea guide or seeing a dermatologist.

Barrier Repair Starter Routine

The ultra-simple routine for healing damaged skin. Boring is the point.

AM Routine

  1. 1 Water rinse or ultra-gentle cleanser (no foaming)
  2. 2 Simple moisturizer — fragrance-free, minimal ingredients
  3. 3 Sunscreen SPF 30+ — mineral often gentler on damaged skin

PM Routine

  1. 1 Gentle cleanser — cream or milk texture, no actives
  2. 2 Moisturizer — same as AM, or heavier cream if tolerated
  3. 3 Optional: Occlusive — thin layer of Vaseline or Aquaphor on dry patches

Ingredient Cheat Sheet

What helps, what to avoid while healing.

✓ Ceramides

Rebuild the lipid barrier directly. Look for ceramide NP, AP, EOP.

✓ Niacinamide 5%

Anti-inflammatory, supports barrier. Avoid if stinging (rare).

✓ Panthenol (B5)

Soothing, promotes healing. Found in many gentle products.

✓ Squalane

Non-irritating, hydrating oil. Works for most skin types.

✓ Centella / Cica

Calming, healing. Great for post-damage recovery.

✗ Retinoids

Stop all retinol/tretinoin until fully healed (7-14+ days).

✗ AHA/BHA/PHA

No acids while barrier is damaged. They make it worse.

✗ Vitamin C

L-AA can sting on damaged skin. Pause until healed.

✗ Alcohol-based toners

Extremely drying. Throw them out entirely.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

These will delay your recovery or make things worse.

Continuing actives "at a lower dose." Stop means stop. Even less retinoid is still retinoid on a damaged barrier.

Buying 10 "barrier repair" products at once. More products = more potential irritants. Keep it minimal.

Going back to your old routine after a week. That routine caused this. You need a new, gentler approach.

Reintroducing multiple actives at once. One active, 1-2x/week, wait 2 weeks before adding another.

Using hot water on your face. Hot water strips oils. Use lukewarm or cool water only.

Skipping sunscreen because "it stings." Find a mineral SPF you tolerate. UV damage slows healing.

When to See a Dermatologist

Some situations need professional evaluation.

Consider seeing a derm if:
  • No improvement after 2 weeks of the reset routine
  • Persistent redness, flushing, or visible blood vessels (could be rosacea)
  • Itching, scaling, or rash patterns that suggest contact dermatitis
  • Skin barrier issues keep recurring despite careful routines
  • You need prescription barrier repair (e.g., EpiCeram, Eletone)
  • Unsure whether it's barrier damage or an underlying condition
